When we got in to the airport, we were waiting for the baggage and we saw a man with an instrument. Alan asked him what instrument it was and he told us it was an oboe and he was the principal player for the Gewandhaus Orchestra. It was so amazing to meet him, we had literally just gotten off the plane!
The next day, we had an amazing walking tour of the city. We saw so many things, including Bach's church. I can't wait to go back and see it in more depth and see where Bach is buried in the church. In the evening, Lyndi, Claire, Miranda, Megan, Jennifer, and I went to this jazz club and had drinks. It was a lot of fun and we tried real German beer.
Today we went to the market in the square and got some amazing produce. After the market we went to the art museum and it was so inspiring! I really loved this marble statue of Beethoven. It was so intricate and detailed. Beethoven was sitting on this chair with scenes of Adam and Eve on the back and there was a hawk or some kind of big bird sitting at the front of the chair with Beethoven. After the art museum we went to the government building and went on a tour to the top of the tower. It was so cool! We could see the whole city!
After seeing the tower, we went to have a late lunch. It was so good and the food was so fresh. We also had amazing hot chocolate drinks there after lunch that were so rich and delicious. Now it was time for our first concert! We went to the Gewandhaus Brass Quintet and it was an amazing concert to start the trip with! It was a very laid back, intimate concert setting in the foyer. They even had drinks and a little food out for people. It was such a nice concert! The group sounded amazing and it was very cool to see our first rotary valve trumpets of the trip!
I can't wait to see what else this trio has in store for us!
